(Miri, 29th) District police chief assistant commissioner Alexson Naga Chabu noted that a landslide occurred early this morning at Kampung Lereng Bukit Miri, involving two houses and 12 residents. The incident resulted in 5 deaths, 2 injuries, and 5 survivors. After an extended search and rescue operation, the body of the last missing person, a 71-year-old woman, was found at 6:06 pm today and successfully extricated at 6:26 pm, marking the official end of the search and rescue operations.
He held a press conference this evening to announce the completion of the search and rescue mission, expressing gratitude to all units involved in the rescue efforts, including the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defense Force, Armed Forces, Public Works Department, and other related agencies for their full support.
He revealed that the incident occurred around 2:40 am when a sudden landslide buried two houses under debris, trapping 12 people. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the rescue teams, 5 were confirmed dead, 2 injured, and 5 managed to escape successfully.
He pointed out that the body of the last victim, a 71-year-old woman, was discovered in the final phase of the rescue operation. Her body was buried under house debris and pinned by concrete, which increased the difficulty of the search. The rescue teams used excavators and specialized equipment to successfully extricate her.
He stated that due to ongoing landslide risks in the affected area, authorities have decided to temporarily evacuate residents and relocate them to a temporary relief center to ensure safety. Currently, the Public Works Department is further assessing the geological conditions of the area.
He also expressed thanks for the media's assistance and urged the public not to spread unverified information to avoid unnecessary panic. The bodies of the victims have been sent to the hospital for processing, and the police will follow up with a sudden death investigation.
