Nationwide 90 Actions Detain 538 People: Police Seize RM3.8 Billion in Illegal E-Waste

With the assistance of the Environmental Department, the police have uncovered a variety of illegal e-waste activities nationwide from last year to the 17th of this month (Monday), recovering e-waste items valued up to RM3.8 billion.

According to the Director of the National Police Internal Security and Public Order Department, Datuk Seri Azmi, the items seized by the police also include processing machines, scales, and tin processing machines.

He stated that during actions uncovering 90 cases, a total of 538 people, aged from two to 60 years old, were detained.

He made this statement at a press conference held on Thursday at the National Police Headquarters with the Environmental Department Director, Datuk Wan Abdul Latif.

He mentioned that just during the single-day "Ops Hazard" operation conducted on Saturday (the 15th), the police seized about 22.9 million kilograms of electronic waste, valued at RM2.68 billion, from 47 illegal sites nationwide.

He added that 246 people were detained during the operation.

He stated that these illegal groups registered recycling centers under the names of locals, but in reality, they were operated and managed by Chinese nationals.
