(Kota Samarahan, 6th) – A local man died last night following a traffic accident at the 17th kilometer of the Kota Samarahan-Asajaya Road. The incident involved a car and a motorcycle.
Kota Samarahan District Police Chief Superintendent Damataries Lautin stated that the accident occurred at around 7:22 PM during heavy rain, which resulted in slippery road surfaces and low visibility, thereby increasing the risks for drivers and riders.
He said that preliminary investigations revealed that a 39-year-old man was driving a Toyota Vios from Sibu Yao towards Kuching, when a motorcycle suddenly entered the opposite lane and crashed into the car, damaging the right front of the vehicle.
“The motorcyclist, also a 39-year-old male, suffered severe injuries to his left thigh and was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said.
Damataries pointed out that the car driver was unharmed and is fully cooperating with the police investigation.
Both vehicles involved were badly damaged—the front of the motorcycle was severely crushed, and the right front section of the car was also heavily impacted.
“The investigating officer confirmed that the accident happened on a two-way flat road; however, the heavy rain at the time is believed to have been the main factor contributing to the accident.
“The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (dangerous driving causing death). Both vehicles involved have been sent to the Kota Samarahan Traffic Police Station for further investigation.
“The deceased’s body has been sent to the Forensic Department of Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching for further processing,” he said.
The police urge the public to be extra careful when driving in adverse weather conditions and to maintain a safe distance to prevent tragedies from occurring.
