(Miri, 5th) Continuous overnight rainfall triggered floods, submerging multiple villages in Bakenu. Authorities activated a temporary evacuation center yesterday (January 4), relocating 161 people from 52 families.
The evacuation center, located at SMK Bekenu in Subis, was opened at 2:30 p.m. due to rising water levels in low-lying areas, making homes no longer safe.
The affected villages include Kampung Kawang, Kampung Jengalas, Kampung Rambai, Kampung Pintasan Tiris, Kampung Masjid Tiris, as well as Kampung Kuala Lajung in Niah.

The Miri Civil Defense Force stated that the evacuees include men, women, children, infants, elderly, and persons with disabilities. The official count only covers those currently housed at the evacuation center.
Emergency personnel from multiple agencies and departments have arrived at the scene to assist with the disaster response. No reports of casualties have been received so far.
Authorities indicated that the situation in the evacuation center remains under control. As of last night, the weather has shown signs of improvement. Relevant agencies will continue to monitor and provide the latest updates.
