(Bandar Seri Begawan, 21st) The 22nd China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) opened on September 17 at the Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center in China. The theme of this year's expo is 'Digital and Intelligent Innovation Empowering Development—Seizing New Opportunities in the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0, Building a Closer China-ASEAN Community of Shared Destiny,' gathering regional leaders, ministers, and businesses.
The five-day expo is hosted by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and focuses on cooperation in the fields of trade, innovation, and emerging industries.
The Bruneian delegation attended, with Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah attending, accompanied by Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Ir. Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar.
This year’s CAEXPO saw participation from 13 Bruneian enterprises, including government-linked companies (GLCs), statutory agencies, and start-ups, showcasing in the City of Charm Pavilion, Commodity Pavilion, and the ASEAN High-Tech Pavilion.
This is Brunei’s first time exhibiting at the ASEAN High-Tech Pavilion.
On September 17, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew attended the China-ASEAN Industry Ministers Roundtable organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China.
This roundtable provided a platform for ministers and senior officials from ASEAN countries to exchange views on industrial policies and best practices, continuing the positive momentum from the China-ASEAN Emerging Industries Forum held in Shenzhen in July 2023.
Minister Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew also held high-level meetings with We Tao, Chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Chen Gang, Secretary of the Guangxi Party Committee, and Wang Weiping, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee. On September 18, Minister Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew attended the fifth meeting of the Joint Cooperation Committee of the Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor (BGEC-JCC5).
The Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor continues to play a key role in advancing cooperation in aquaculture, information and communication technology, logistics, food processing, and tourism—critical areas supporting Brunei’s economic diversification agenda. Progress on the development of Muara Port and direct shipping connections with Beibu Gulf ports have further strengthened trade connectivity.
Brunei also values Guangxi’s support in maintaining the Royal Brunei Airlines’ Brunei-Nanning route and hopes this support will continue to ensure the long-term development of trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
Looking ahead, Brunei welcomes increased Chinese investment in food security, downstream oil and gas, logistics services, information and communication technology, and tourism. As part of this event, Minister Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew and Wei Tao witnessed the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding.
These memorandums cover strategic areas such as electrolytic aluminum production and the joint development of the Brunei Temburong Industrial Park, as well as initiatives aimed at strengthening Brunei’s start-ups and innovation ecosystem through advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing.
Wang Naixue, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Guangxi Committee, and Dr. Haji Mohd Firdaus Abdul Rahman, Permanent Secretary (Economy, Trade and Industry) at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, also attended the signing ceremony.
