Zelensky Meets Canadian Prime Minister Before U.S. Visit; Ukraine Secures $2.5 Billion Economic Aid

(Ukraine, 28th) — Ukrainian President Zelensky stopped in Canada en route to the United States, where Canadian Prime Minister Carney announced $2.5 billion (about RM101.75 billion) in economic aid to Ukraine.

According to Reuters and AFP, Zelensky met with Carney in Halifax, Canada on Saturday (December 27). During their joint event, Carney announced an additional $2.5 billion in economic aid to Ukraine, to help Kyiv obtain financing support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Carney said Russia’s massive airstrike earlier that day on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, underscored the necessity of supporting Ukraine.
He said, “We have the conditions for a just and lasting peace, but that requires Russia’s cooperation. Yet, the barbarism we witnessed the night before ... only underscores the vital importance of supporting Ukraine.”

Ukrainian authorities said the overnight drone and missile attack on Kyiv left two dead, dozens injured, and over a million residents without electricity or heating; about 2,600 apartment buildings and more than 300 schools, kindergartens, and social service institutions were damaged in the attack.
Zelensky said approximately 500 drones and 40 missiles heavily bombarded the capital and surrounding regions. He accused “Russian representatives of engaging in lengthy negotiations, while in reality, ‘Dagger’ missiles and ‘Shahed’ drones speak for them.”
Russian President Putin said on Saturday that Ukraine is currently not eager for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Zelensky countered that Moscow had no intention to end the war, “and instead is trying to seize every opportunity to inflict greater suffering on Ukraine.”

After meeting with Carney, Zelensky will brief EU allies. He will also meet with U.S. President Trump on Sunday (28th), and then hold talks with European leaders.
