KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, has called for stronger community engagement as the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Blue Line Package 2 project moves forward.

Wee stressed that urban development must balance infrastructure progress with residents’ peace of mind.

“While we support development that will bring long-term benefits to the city, we must also safeguard the well-being and peace of mind of our residents.

“It is not just about building infrastructure, but also about building trust,” he said when chairing a dialogue session with Taman Stutong Indah residents recently.

He said residents had voiced concerns over noise, safety, road access, and insufficient prior communication about the project.

In response, Wee proposed that Sarawak Metro establish a dedicated hotline to ensure communities can raise issues, report safety concerns, and access timely updates.

He emphasised that early consultation is vital to avoid unnecessary disruptions and foster mutual understanding.

The session concluded on a positive note, with residents, MBKS, and stakeholders reaffirming their commitment to responsible urban growth and meaningful public participation.

Wee added that MBKS will continue to work with Sarawak Metro, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), the Ministry of Transport (MOT), the police, and other agencies to ensure development aligns with community needs.
