(U.S., 3rd) Microsoft Corporation has initiated a new round of layoffs, which will affect around 9,000 employees. This is the company’s second large-scale layoff this year, aimed at controlling costs.
Bloomberg quoted a company spokesperson as saying that this round of layoffs will impact less than 4% of the company’s total workforce. The layoffs involve various teams, regions, and levels of seniority, with the goal of streamlining processes and management structures.
The spokesperson said: "We continue to implement necessary organizational adjustments so that the company and its teams are positioned optimally in a constantly changing market environment."
Microsoft confirmed to Reuters that its gaming division has been affected by the layoffs, although the number of layoffs there does not make up the majority. The company did not provide further details.
Bloomberg previously reported that Microsoft planned to lay off thousands of employees in July, including sales staff, with cuts impacting several business units, including Xbox. Prior to this round, Microsoft conducted another large-scale layoff in May, cutting about 6,000 employees, primarily focused on product and engineering positions.
As of the end of June 2024, Microsoft had around 228,000 employees, with about 45,000 working in sales and marketing. The company often conducts team reorganizations or announces related adjustments around the end of its fiscal year, which closes in June.
