(Kuching, 7th) Young students from Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan performed brilliantly at the 2026 HIPPO English Olympiad Asia-Pacific Regional Finals held in Phuket, Thailand, securing two third-place finishes and bringing pride to Borneo.
A total of 25 students represented Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan, competing alongside outstanding students from 20 countries and regions in the Asia-Pacific. The event took place from July 2nd to 5th in Phuket, Thailand.
HIPPO, 'English Without Borders', is an international English Olympiad competition for students aged 6 to 19, with participation from over 70 countries and regions.
The competition is divided into several stages, mainly assessing students' English reading comprehension, language use, writing, and speaking abilities.
Puteri Aulia Delisya Mohd Syahmi from SK Wira Jaya, Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, won third place in the HIPPO 1 category, earning honor for Sarawak.
For Sabah, Alton Chin Bo Yik from SJKC Yuk Chin in Tawau, took third place in the Little HIPPO category, also achieving an excellent result.
All participating students first passed the national selection before earning the qualification to represent Malaysian Borneo in the Asia-Pacific regional finals.
This international event not only provides a platform for students to showcase their English abilities but also promotes friendship, cultural exchange, and cooperation among the participating countries and regions.
In addition to the competition, the students interacted and exchanged ideas with participants from all over the Asia-Pacific, and took the opportunity to actively promote Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan, and Malaysia.
The delegation also included students from schools in Bintulu, Miri, Kuching, Sibu, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, Lahad Datu, Ranau, Tawau, and Labuan.
