(Bandar Seri Begawan, 11th) The Ministry of Education of Brunei, through the Special Education Unit’s Center for Intelligence and Gifted Education Development (EDGE), has arranged for a sixth-form student and an accompanying staff member to participate in the APEC Youth Researchers STEM Forum (APEC STEM), held from the 10th to 15th of this month at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Sacheon, and Tongyeong in Korea.
The Bruneian delegation departed for Korea yesterday. Director of Educational Psychology Services of the Special Education Unit, Norhamimah Haji, and Administrative Officer Pengiran Omar from the Special Education Unit were present at Brunei International Airport to send off the delegation.
Lau Wei Rong, a student from Seria Sixth Form Centre, stood out in the host's strict and highly competitive selection process due to his outstanding performance in the 17th APEC Mentoring and Research Activities (APEC MRA) held online since January this year, and was successfully selected to attend this Youth Researchers STEM Forum.
During the forum, Brunei Ministry of Education Special Education Officer, Ya Hu Da, will accompany Lau Wei Rong throughout the event.
The forum aims to cultivate a new generation of young researchers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) by providing opportunities such as collaborative research, academic exchanges, and laboratory research, while also promoting scientific cooperation and exchange between APEC member economies, and establishing a sustainable cooperation network.
During the forum, students and accompanying personnel will participate in a variety of activities arranged by the organizers, including the promotion of collaborative research projects, presentation of research proposals, and exchange of ideas. They will also visit the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) in Sacheon, and Gyeongsangnam-do Fisheries Resource Research Institute in Tongyeong.
The APEC Youth Researchers STEM Forum is a continuation of the 17th APEC Mentoring and Research Activities (APEC MRA).
This forum is co-organized by the APEC Mentoring and Guidance Center for Science Gifted (AMGS) and the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), and hosted by the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT.
The forum is supported by organizations such as the Gyeongsangnam-do Government, Gyeongnam University, National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC), and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH).
In addition to the Brunei delegation coordinated by the Ministry of Education, the organizers have also specially invited a program alumni from the Center for Intelligence and Gifted Education Development, Lee Jing Jing, a Year 6 graduate of Sultan Father King Science College, to participate in this forum. She previously won the “Future STEM Leader Award” at the 2025 APEC Youth STEM Conference.
