(Miri, 3rd) Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that Sarawak, as a state of harmonious coexistence of diverse cultures, considers the preservation and inheritance of Chinese culture as an essential component of a multicultural society. He emphasized that culture is not only the memory of a nation but also its foundation and soul. Chinese calligraphy, as a symbol of traditional culture, influences not only the artistic level but also has a profound impact on education and values.

During his speech at the opening ceremony of the 4th Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin Challenge Cup Calligraphy Competition—Northern Sarawak Region's Primary and Secondary Schools and Open Calligraphy Competition hosted by the Miri Chinese Community Association, co-hosted by the Riam Road Secondary School's Calligraphy Society and the Miri Calligraphy Society, Li Jing Sheng expressed his honor and joy at being able to attend an event named after himself. He first extended high respect and sincere gratitude to the Miri Chinese Chamber and all the teachers and students of Riam Road Secondary School.

Minister Li mentioned that at the beginning of the new year and with the Lunar New Year approaching, calligraphy, as a traditional custom during the Chinese New Year, carries blessings for the New Year and expectations for a better life. He noted that writing couplets is a way to encourage oneself to pursue new hopes and provides a learning platform for the younger generation. Especially in the mobile phone era, where writing opportunities are decreasing, such competitions help prevent cultural loss and encourage everyone to express art and beauty through calligraphy.

Li Jing Sheng also emphasized that the calligraphy competition not only provides an opportunity for calligraphy enthusiasts to exchange and learn but also allows more people to experience the charm of calligraphy art up close. He particularly pointed out that participants from 23 primary and secondary schools across six districts in Northern Sarawak showcased their efforts and talents through such activities, making the competition increasingly successful over the past few years. It has become an important platform for promoting Chinese culture.

He further stated that cultural inheritance is not the responsibility of a single ethnic group but a mission for the entire society. The values embodied in Chinese culture, such as respect for the elderly, love for the young, national affection, and the pursuit of excellence, can enrich Sarawak's multicultural ecology and infuse invisible strength into national development. Through cultural inheritance and exchange, not only can national identity be strengthened, but understanding and cooperation among different ethnic groups can be fostered, laying the foundation for national unity and prosperity.

In today's rapidly advancing globalization, Minister Li pointed out that traditional culture faces challenges in modern society, and both the government and society need to work together to protect and pass on cultural heritage. He stated that education plays an important role in this, and competitions like the "Chinese Calligraphy Challenge Cup" are conveying the charm of Chinese culture to the younger generation in a vivid and attractive way. He recognized the wholehearted dedication of Riam Road Secondary School's teachers and students, considering it a powerful demonstration of education and cultural inheritance.

Li Jing Sheng concluded by expressing his hope that the Miri Chinese Association and Riam Road Secondary School continue collaborating, injecting innovative elements into the competition, allowing more people to participate in and witness the brilliance of Chinese culture. He also promised that the government will fully support such activities and provide policy and resource support to ensure that Chinese culture shines on the stage in Sarawak, Malaysia, and internationally.

He sincerely thanked all the participants for their efforts and contributions and wished the competition a complete success, hoping that participants can produce outstanding works with their calligraphy skills.
