(Kuala Belait, 12th) The “Hakka Streaming Project” representative from Taiwan Hakka Affairs Council Hakka Foundation, Ms. Hsieh Kai-Chuan, recently made a special trip to Brunei and visited Brunei Hakka spiritual leader and Founding Permanent Honorary President of the Brunei Chung Cheng Hakka Association, Mr. Cai Zaiyun.
The two sides held in-depth discussions at the temporary venue of the Brunei Chung Cheng Hakka Association, focusing on the theme of “History and Cultural Heritage of the Nanyang Migration.” During the conversation, both parties centered on the history of Hakka people migrating to Southeast Asia in the nineteenth century, exploring the process of early Hakka emigrants sailing from Meizhou and Huizhou in Guangdong to Brunei to make a living. They also shared how the Hakka community in Brunei established their roots locally, their living habits, and food culture; and further exchanged views on how to continue passing down the Hakka language, culture, and spirit among the third and fourth generations to ensure that Hakka culture continues to thrive and develop overseas.
Cai Zaiyun provided Hsieh Kai-Chuan with valuable primary materials, including early membership rosters, event photographs, and historical documents preserved by the Brunei Chung Cheng Hakka Association, offering the Taiwan side priceless first-hand resources for research on Southeast Asian Hakka.
Hsieh Kai-Chuan expressed gratitude to Cai Zaiyun for his long-term contributions to the preservation of Hakka culture and thanked the Brunei Chung Cheng Hakka Association for their strong support of this field study.
Cai Zaiyun also thanked the Taiwan Hakka Affairs Council, Hakka Foundation, and Taiwan Hakka Cultural Association for their concern for Southeast Asian Hakka people, and highly praised Taiwan’s efforts and contributions in promoting Hakka culture.
Both parties stated that in the future, they will strengthen exchanges and cooperation between Taiwanese and Bruneian Hakka circles, and work together for the transmission and development of global Hakka culture. At the end of their exchange, the two sides exchanged souvenirs and special publications. The association’s Deputy Welfare Director, Yang Guohua, also attended the exchange activity, which took place in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.
