Accused of Being Heartless for Refusing to Attend Relatives' Funerals, Jet Li Responds Wisely with Enlightenment on Life and Death

Since Jet Li, now 62, was diagnosed with a thyroid disorder more than a decade ago, he has been plagued by health issues, greatly reducing his output and making him almost absent from the big screen, turning instead to Buddhist study. In a recent interview with Mainland media, when discussing life and death, Li candidly admitted he has come to terms with the principles of life and death, and as such rarely attends the funerals of friends and relatives in recent years.

After Jet Li’s remarks went public, netizens misunderstood his intentions and even accused him of being “too heartless, forgetting friendships”. However, Li’s high level of enlightenment is indeed not something the average person can comprehend.

Jet Li spoke about how his study of Buddhism has changed his views on life, frankly saying he has come to see all things with detachment, viewing life’s impermanence as a manifestation of nature’s cycles; regarding growing older and the regret of losing friends, Li responded by rhetorically asking, “Why feel regret?”—believing that feeling pain over life and death is something “people who are stuck in the game do.”

Jet Li further shared the insight he has gained: “In TV dramas, it’s always like ‘Oh, you’re gone, I didn’t see you one last time, you said you wanted to buy a bag, and I didn’t buy it for you.’ From ancient to modern TV dramas, it’s always like this. When people around me die, maybe everyone’s just used to it. I don’t attend funerals, and people say ‘You’re too heartless, too unkind,’ but I tell them, ‘Bro, there’s no one who doesn’t lose loved ones’.”
