Airbus Develops Double-Decker Seats Onboard to Enhance Legroom for Passengers

In recent years, the aviation industry has been noted for a phenomenon where companies are adding more seats on aircraft to pursue profits, causing passenger space to become increasingly cramped. Now, a solution might soon appear on the planes of European company Airbus — double-decker seats.

Reportedly, the startup company Chaise Longue, headquartered in Madrid, Spain, is collaborating with Airbus to introduce these double-decker seats designed in a “one up, one down” format. To maximize space utilization, the concept features a row of seats placed on an elevated platform followed by a row of seats at normal height.

For passengers on the upper level, concerns about reclining chairs will also become a thing of the past, because there is no one behind to complain about it. Meanwhile, the increased space under the row in front allows passengers on the bottom layer to stretch their legs and even slightly elevate them.

This double-decker concept was proposed by Vicente, CEO and founder of Chaise Longue, who stated that his company is exploring “early concepts” with Airbus.

In a LinkedIn post, Vicente said, “After 4 years of an exciting pursuit, I have always dreamed of improving the passenger experience and offering them the service they truly deserve. Today, I am very pleased to announce this news.”

“This is the dawn of a new era in commercial aviation, so I hope you are as excited about this news as we are, and soon you will be able to fly the skies in more comfortable, spacious two-tier seats.”
