The Osaka City Waterworks Bureau in Japan received a donation of gold bars weighing 21 kilograms from an anonymous individual, currently valued at about 560 million yen (14.1467 million MYR). The bureau stated the donation will be used to repair the city's aging water supply system. Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama said the donation amount was "astonishing" and he was "so moved he was left speechless."

It is reported that the gold bars were donated by an anonymous donor in November last year, and this mysterious person also donated 500,000 yen (12,600 MYR) in cash.

According to statistics from the Osaka City Waterworks Bureau, in the 2024 fiscal year, there have been over 90 incidents of water leakage under the streets of Osaka. Yokoyama said: "Repairing old water pipes requires a huge investment. Therefore, I can only express my deep gratitude."

Osaka is located in the Kansai region of Japan and is the country's third largest city, with nearly 3 million residents. It is an important commercial center. But like many Japanese cities, Osaka's water and sewage pipelines are gradually aging.

Local media reports point out that over 20% of Japan's water pipes have exceeded the statutory service life of 40 years. Due to the aging of sewage infrastructure in many cities, sinkholes are also becoming increasingly common in Japanese cities.
