Yeoh Urges Gender-Responsive Public Facilities For Women

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has called for improved gender-responsive public facilities to better support women’s participation in physical activities.

She said such efforts are important as gaps in public amenities often go unnoticed when women are underrepresented in decision-making roles.

“For women, the lack of proper facilities such as showers can be a real barrier to exercise. You cannot expect someone to go to work sweaty without the means to freshen up, and this is something we need to address.

“If we want more women to exercise in Kuala Lumpur, we must start building proper public shower facilities for ladies. If you’re not in the room, if you’re not at the table, these needs are often overlooked,” she said.

Hannah said this during a plenary session at the Women’s Rights Conference 2026: Together We Create PowHER titled “Future Issue: She Owns The Future”, held here today.

The session also featured Tan Sri Dr Mazlan Othman, Malaysia’s first astrophysicist, who shared insights on leadership and innovation from a scientific perspective.

The one-day conference brought together policymakers, legal practitioners and regional experts to discuss women’s rights, leadership and digital safety, including challenges related to online harassment.
