(Kuching, 31st) South City Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasized that the New Year is a time for renewal and new beginnings, and a time to set new goals and dreams. Instead of dwelling on the challenges of the past, it is better to focus on the future, move forward steadfastly, seek solutions, and build a better tomorrow.
In his 2025 New Year message today, he pointed out that the end of the year gives everyone time to reflect on the happiness they possess, whether it's family, health, community, or all sorts of things. It is also a time for people to appreciate the achievements made together and to remind each other of the strength demonstrated in unity and cooperation.
For the South City Council, he said that in 2024, Kuching South City became a proud member of the Age-Friendly City Network, showcasing the council’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for the elderly.
“Our dedication to active, healthy aging has made the Kuching southern district a pioneer in Sarawak, nurturing a community where all generations can thrive.”
Dato Wee Hong Seng said that through the child-friendly city initiative, the South City has established the Kuching South District Children’s Council, further demonstrating our determination to create nurturing and supportive environments for young residents.
“With our city's strong community ties, high living standards, and an extensive network of health and social support organizations, we are fully capable of making these strategies successful.”
Additionally, he said that in line with South City being designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, the council will launch the “Love Your Market” campaign, aimed at encouraging our community to support local markets and hawker centers as they are the major sources of our unique Sarawak ingredients.
He stated that this initiative invites people to celebrate this vibrant heritage and propose ways to sustain it.
As part of this event, Dato Wee Hong Seng announced that the council will be upgrading existing markets and hawker centers in phases to enhance their appeal and ensure they remain vibrant hubs of community interaction and culinary experience while continuing to prepare for the new culinary center currently under construction, expected to open in 2027.
As part of the green initiative, the council has also upgraded existing parks, including Taman Rekreasi Hui Sing, to create better spaces for community engagement, recreation, and relaxation. These upgrades include improved facilities such as better walkways, expanded children's play areas, and new seating and shaded areas for family gatherings. The improvements will also include enhanced landscaping, increased greenery, and eco-friendly features to promote sustainability.
“Our efforts not only make parks more accessible and enjoyable for users of all ages but also encourage healthier lifestyles, strengthen community bonds, and enhance overall well-being. By providing upgraded and inclusive public spaces, we are fostering a greener, healthier, more connected southern district of Kuching.”
Dato Wee Hong Seng also emphasized that the South City Council embraces innovation and is moving towards becoming a smart city, gradually implementing electronic submissions for processes such as building plans, tenders, and permits. These improvements will enhance efficiency and transparency, benefiting both businesses and residents.
As 2025 approaches, he expressed excitement in implementing the above initiatives and further elevating the southern district of Kuching based on the achievements made by South City.
He said that whether it is promoting inclusivity through projects suitable for the elderly and children, upgrading parks to create a greener community through the “Love Your Market” campaign, or advancing the smart city agenda, these efforts will drive the southern district towards a brighter, more prosperous future.
