(Serian, 3rd) After their father passed away at the end of last year, a pair of middle-aged intellectually disabled siblings living here have continued to receive assistance from Kuching Hope Place.
According to a press release from the non-governmental organization, 62-year-old Jong Thian Poh lives together with his 59-year-old sister, Lee Chu. Their father, Jong Sze Khin, passed away in December 2025 at the age of 95.
The press release pointed out: "Hope Place had already extended a helping hand to the family while the father was still alive, and continued to provide support after his passing to ensure the siblings' basic living needs are met."
Jong Thian Poh has never held a stable job, and for a long time has earned a meager income by collecting recyclable items, often riding his bicycle to markets and coffee shops in Serian town to collect materials.
His situation worsened in 2021 after an accident which led to a head injury and required hospitalization.
His sister Lee Chu does not work, has limited communication abilities, and is rather introverted, typically keeping to herself and avoiding eye contact with others.
Although she does not interact much with people, she is very fond of animals, especially dogs, and looks after several dogs at home.
The siblings live a simple life, sometimes foraging for wild vegetables as food; although there is a gas cylinder at home, Jong Thian Poh still often gathers firewood to cook over an open flame.
A church group visits about once a week to check on their living conditions; Hope Place currently provides basic food aid.
Anyone who wishes to help or would like more information may contact Hope Place or the Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK) at 082-505987 or 013-5672775. Donations are welcome and receipts will be provided upon request.
