(Miri, 3rd) A thief attempted to evade detection by giving a stolen motorcycle a 'makeover', changing its body color and swapping out its wheel rims, but ultimately failed to deceive the police.
Miri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Fahhan Lee Abdullah issued a statement yesterday pointing out that the case began on January 27, when a Honda NF110 motorcycle parked in front of a residential area near a national secondary school in Miri was stolen.
He said: “Based on intelligence, police conducted a raid on a residence in Marudi on February 1, arresting a 43-year-old local man believed to be connected to this motorcycle theft case.”
The suspect originally hoped to avoid pursuit by repainting and replacing the wheel rims, but his plan ultimately failed, and police successfully recovered the stolen motorcycle.
Further investigation revealed that the man had a criminal record involving theft, criminal intimidation, and drug abuse. Preliminary urine test results also showed a positive reaction to methamphetamine.
Police have remanded the suspect until February 4, 2026, invoking Section 379A of the Penal Code for further investigation. Upon conviction, this section provides for imprisonment of one to seven years and may also include a fine.
Fahhan urged the public to remain vigilant and continue to assist the police. Suspicious activities should be reported immediately.
