(Seria, 25th) Under the umbrella of Jide Care Association, the “Cultural Learning Forum” launched a unique integrated cultural course this Friday, organically blending the study of Chinese traditional classics, Chinese character analysis, introductions to minority ethnic cultures, and contemporary knowledge about Chinese naval vessels and historical figures, attracting the enthusiastic participation of many attendees.
In class, participants recited the Daodejing, analyzed famous poems from the Book of Songs, traced the cultural origins of the character “Zhai” (翟), and learned about the customs and features of Yunnan’s ethnic minorities, further deepening their understanding of Chinese culture.
The course featured a special “Marine and National Defense” topic, offering a detailed introduction to the two naval vessels currently visiting Brunei—the training ship “Qi Jiguang” and the landing dock ship “Kunlun Shan”—explaining the specifications, loading capacities, and core functions of these vessels, and systematically outlining the naming conventions for Chinese naval ships.
It was explained that Chinese aircraft carriers are named after provincial-level administrative areas; destroyers adopt the names of major cities; frigates correspond to medium and small cities; and supply ships are named after lakes. “Mountain-class” ships are primarily tasked with transporting troops and equipment from sea to land, while vessels named after historical figures are mostly training and experimental ships.
The course then focused on the “Qi Jiguang” ship, reviewing the life and deeds of the famous Ming Dynasty general Qi Jiguang, with emphasis on his outstanding contributions to coastal defense and the defense of the northern frontier, including the formation of the “Qi Family Army” and inventing the “Mandarin Duck Formation.”
The class also explored folk culture, introducing the Foochow community in Brunei and Sarawak, as well as the traditional snack “Guang Bing” widely popular along the coasts of Fujian and Zhejiang. Its origin as a military food invented during Qi Jiguang’s campaigns was explained, allowing participants to experience the deep cultural heritage of the region while learning about national defense.
The “Cultural Learning Forum” aims to break down the barriers between literature, history, geography, military affairs, and folk traditions from diverse perspectives, so that participants can both enhance their cultural confidence and broaden their general knowledge. More themed courses will be offered in the future.
