(Bandar Seri Begawan, 17th Dec) The Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) enforcement officers inspected 11 foreign nationals and detained six of them during a recent inspection of several houses and rental properties in Kampong Kiarong.
The detainees were taken to the enforcement department for further investigation. These individuals are suspected of violating Chapter 17, Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act, by overstaying in Brunei after their immigration permits were revoked.
The department also reported taking two individuals to court. The first case involves a 37-year-old Bangladeshi man named Baman, who was sentenced to 10 months in prison and three strokes of the cane.
The defendant admitted to entering Brunei without using a designated immigration checkpoint, staying in the country without valid immigration status, failing to leave Brunei through a declared immigration checkpoint, and overstaying.
The second case involves a 57-year-old Indonesian man named Suwandi, who was sentenced to 12 months in prison and fined 800 Brunei dollars for overstaying after his immigration pass expired. However, Suwandi's failure to pay the fine resulted in an additional month's imprisonment.
The department reminds the public that if they have any information regarding immigration offenders, they should contact the department's hotline at 8734888 / 8753888 (Bandar Seri Begawan) or 8984111 (Belait District).
