He noted that there may be aftershocks of around magnitude 5 in the coming week, but given the depth, the tremors at the surface would not be very distinct.
According to the Weather Bureau's data, the epicenter was located 35.8 kilometers east-southeast of the New Taipei City Government (in Shuangxi District, New Taipei City), with a depth of 95.7 kilometers. The maximum intensity of 3 was recorded in Yilan County, New Taipei City, Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Hualien County, Taichung City, and Miaoli County.
Wu Jianfu indicated that there could be aftershocks of around magnitude 4.5 to 5 within the next week. However, due to the considerable depth, most of the energy from the seismic waves will have been absorbed before reaching the surface, so the observed intensity at the surface is expected to be only 1 to 2. People may barely feel the tremors.
