(Kuching, Jan 31) Sarawak Deputy Premier and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Chairman Datuk Amar Douglas pointed out that residents of Sarawak affected by floods need not worry about leaving their homes, but should follow the authorities' instructions to evacuate to ensure their own safety.

He stated that the police will continue to monitor the affected areas, including villages and the residences of those who have moved to temporary evacuation centers.

"I urge all residents, if your home is flooded, please immediately seek refuge at the temporary evacuation centers. Today, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha was also present, and he has assured us that the police will strengthen monitoring of these residential areas to ensure that no unpleasant incidents occur."

Datuk Amar Douglas made these remarks at a press conference after inspecting the temporary evacuation centers in Serian and Taman Melaka National School, noting that today will witness the highest tide levels, and residents should remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate.

He revealed that tonight will see the highest tide levels, but the respective district disaster management committees are prepared to increase the capacity of temporary evacuation centers for affected residents.

"We still have some temporary evacuation centers that have not been opened. If the number of displaced persons further increases and leads to overcrowding, we will open these centers to ensure smooth relocation for those affected."

He stated that as of noon today, the number of temporary evacuation centers opened across Sarawak has increased to 59, capable of accommodating 2,865 families, totaling 10,215 evacuees.

He emphasized that although the number of evacuees housed in temporary evacuation centers has increased, there is currently no shortage of food supplies in any of Sarawak's temporary evacuation centers.
