KUANTAN, July 29 (Bernama) -- The success of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in representing Malaysia as ASEAN Chair and leading the peace initiative between Thailand and Cambodia should be supported by all Malaysians, regardless of political ideology, UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said.
He said this initiative also reflects Malaysia’s capability as a respected diplomatic actor on the international stage.
“In my view, being a politician does not mean everything must be politicised, especially when it involves foreign relations and global humanitarian issues.
“Malaysia’s ability to bring together the conflicting parties and successfully broker a ceasefire is an achievement we should all be proud of,” he said in a statement today.
In this regard, he called on all parties to assess international matters with maturity and wisdom, and to avoid placing political interests above the need to safeguard the country’s reputation and the dignity of Malaysians on the global stage.
Yesterday, Anwar announced that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to ease tensions along their disputed border, following a special meeting chaired by him in Putrajaya.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the meeting.
