Hong Kong singer Shirley Kwan was reported on the 7th to have been suddenly hospitalized and was even transferred to the ICU for emergency treatment. Her 23-year-old son Kwan Chun Yin and Kwan’s father were both seen at the hospital, with Kwan Chun Yin allegedly spotted sitting on a hospital bench, hugging his knees and crying. The two displayed sorrowful expressions outside the ward, and over the past days, family and friends have taken turns visiting, not daring to leave the hospital even after visiting hours had ended.

It is reported that Kwan Chun Yin had been arranged by his mother to settle in the United States in previous years, so once he learned of his mother’s incident, he immediately rushed back to Hong Kong. Many relatives and friends also arrived at the hospital after receiving the news. None were seen bringing soup or food, leading to speculation that Shirley Kwan is being tube-fed, and her condition appears to be very serious.
In 2014, Shirley Kwan revealed that her son Kwan Chun Yin’s father is Ning Bok Che.
Known for her independent nature, Shirley Kwan rose to fame in 1989 with her unique vocal style in “Rare Lovers,” becoming a top diva of the 1990s. In 2005, she suddenly admitted to having had a child out of wedlock, revealing in 2014 that her son’s father is Ning Bok Che. In November of the same year, she publicly accused her assistant of insulting her in public and even released photos of the assistant online. Just a day or two later, she appeared at an awards ceremony with her then 22-years-younger Chinese boyfriend Li Jianian, making headlines due to their widely discussed “mother-son romance.”
In 2016, Shirley Kwan fell into the sea and stated after being rescued that it was not due to emotional distress or a suicide attempt.
Over the years, she has been rumored to display eccentric or erratic behavior. In 2012, she suddenly wrote a farewell message on social media, raising concerns about suicidal thoughts. In 2016, she fell into the sea at the Discovery Bay beach near her residence. It was rumored at the time that she had broken up with her foreign boyfriend and tried to drown her sorrows in alcohol before attempting suicide by jumping into the sea, but she later denied any suicide attempt and explained that she had accidentally fallen into the water while taking a walk on the beach, not due to a poor emotional state. In 2017, she was involved in a criminal intimidation case at a hotel in Discovery Bay after a dispute with staff; she eventually pleaded guilty to common assault and was fined HKD 2,000 (about RM 1,083) and has a criminal record, while the criminal intimidation charge was withdrawn.
