(Kuching, Jan 30) — Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said the Sarawak government will continue to monitor and be ready to assist victims of natural disasters through the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee.

He expressed sympathy and condolences to the victims of the landslide in Miri and the flood-affected residents across Sarawak.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, in an interview after visiting the residence of Datuk Richard Uggah's Chinese New Year celebration yesterday, pointed out that the tragedy in Miri has resulted in several deaths, and he has asked the Disaster Management Committee Chairman Datuk Amar Douglas to continue monitoring the situation in the next 2 to 3 days.

He stated that the Malaysian Meteorological Department forecasted rainfall in the coming days, and the areas submerged by floods have affected residents in villages, residential areas, and industrial zones, making these areas extremely dangerous.

He disclosed that currently, administrative officers, namely the Deputy Secretary of the Sarawak Government, are in Miri and Bintulu representing the Sarawak government to monitor the latest situation.

"We express our sympathy to the victims in Miri, and we hope other areas will also remain vigilant about the current situation."

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and Sarawak Governor's wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib also attended the 2025 New Year celebration.
