Avoiding July Rate Hike Question, Fed Chair Says Current U.S. Inflation Remains Too High

Published at Jul 02, 2026 11:45 am
U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Waller stated at the European Central Bank's central banking forum in Portugal on the 1st that current U.S. inflation remains too high, and reiterated that the Fed's top priority is to ensure price stability.

He said the Fed will "chart a new policy path," but did not elaborate further.

At the same time, Waller also avoided answering questions about whether interest rates would be raised at the July monetary policy meeting, stressing that he would not provide forward guidance on future rate policy.

He stated that the Federal Reserve is setting up independent working groups to conduct research on topics such as monetary policy communication, economic data systems, productivity, the inflation framework, and balance sheet policies.

He believes that if the current policy framework affects the efficiency of decision-making, reforms should be implemented.
