Indonesian Air Force Adds Korean-made Trainer Jets Another Upgrade in Modern Equipment

Published at Feb 14, 2026 04:21 pm
(Jakarta, 14th) The Indonesian Air Force has received two Korean-made T-50i advanced trainer jets, part of a six-plane order. This follows the arrival of three French Rafale fighter jets in January, marking the latest development in the air force's modernization efforts.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Riko Ricardo Silait stated that the two T-50i aircraft were airlifted from South Korea and are currently being assembled at Iswahjudi Air Base in Madiun, East Java. This batch of jets is aimed at strengthening the Indonesian Air Force’s pilot training and light combat capabilities.

In response to social media videos showing aircraft components transported on trucks and partly covered in black protective fabric, Riko Ricardo Silait emphasized that this mode of transport complies with standard regulations and does not affect the aircraft’s quality or combat performance. He pointed out, "All logistics and transfers of defense equipment are carried out through official security mechanisms and in accordance with current regulations."

The T-50i will be used as a transitional combat trainer aircraft. The Indonesian Air Force had previously operated early models of the same type in the 15th Squadron. In addition, Indonesia received three French Rafale fighter jets in January 2026, marking the first batch delivered out of an order for 42, and the Air Force is currently capable of operating these three jets.

The Indonesian Air Force stated that the gradual addition of T-50i and Rafale jets will significantly enhance the country’s air defense capability. Meanwhile, the government is also reinforcing the strength of its army and navy.

To bolster naval power, Indonesia has purchased several new warships and has expressed interest in acquiring the Italian-built aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi. Navy Chief of Staff Muhammad Ali earlier noted that the carrier is expected to arrive in Indonesia before the anniversary of the establishment of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (October 5, 2026). It is still under procurement negotiations between the Indonesian Ministry of Defense and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.
