(Kuching, 5th) Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) applying for government grants must be legally registered and comply with relevant application requirements. This move aims to strengthen governance, enhance transparency, and ensure the honest management of public funds.

Malaysia’s Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Dato’ Sri Nancy, stated that complying with registration requirements is not only to meet administrative needs, but is also an important mechanism to ensure every government grant is directed to truly qualified organizations operating according to regulations.

"I want to emphasize that all organizations applying for government funds must be registered as non-governmental organizations and comply with the conditions set by the Registrar of Societies (ROS). Only then will their applications be considered."

Nancy made these remarks when interviewed by the media after attending the "Wishesland Kuching 2026 Charity Food Festival" held at Kuching South City Council Hall today.

According to her, all NGOs wishing to apply for financial assistance from government departments or agencies must first be registered with the Registrar of Societies Malaysia and comply with all relevant regulations.

Nancy stated that the government also requires that grant applications must be submitted before project implementation, as every application will be assessed according to current guidelines and financial regulations.

She pointed out that applications submitted after project completion will not be accepted because they do not meet the government grant management procedures.

She explained that the vetting process is also to confirm the qualifications of NGOs, thereby preventing the misuse of organizational names, duplicate applications, and loopholes in the allocation of public funds.

She stated that every department and government agency has the responsibility to ensure government funds are used transparently, prudently, and in compliance with relevant regulations to uphold accountability in fiscal management.

Nancy also reminded everyone that government grants must not be used for political purposes, as each grant must be used according to its established objectives.
