(Kuala Lumpur, May 5) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that due to recent tensions caused by an attack in Kashmir, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has postponed his official visit to Malaysia, which was originally scheduled for this Friday.
In a Facebook post, Anwar shared that Sharif had informed him of this matter through a phone call yesterday.
“I understand the complex situation Pakistan is currently facing and pray that the tensions will ease soon without further escalation.
“I strongly condemn any form of violence and fully support an independent and transparent investigation to uncover the perpetrators behind the attack.”
Anwar further expressed Malaysia's willingness to play a role, if necessary, to help de-escalate the tensions.
He noted that Malaysia’s good relations with both Pakistan and India are crucial assets for maintaining regional peace and stability.
Sharif expressed his appreciation for the close relationship between the two nations and emphasized expediting the signing of the Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) currently under negotiation. Malaysia has pledged to support the process.
“God willing, once the situation allows, we will warmly welcome Prime Minister Sharif’s visit to Malaysia in a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.”
On April 22, a shooting incident in the Pahalgam tourist area of Kashmir claimed 26 lives, further exacerbating tensions between India and Pakistan.
