A Malaysian security supervisor allegedly solicited a bribe of 29 SGD (approximately 95 MYR) from a migrant worker as a reward for not reporting the worker for carrying contraband cigarettes and is also accused of possessing the worker’s work permit without authorization. He has been charged in court.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the Malaysian defendant, Tana Yokara, was charged on the 24th with violating the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.
According to a statement issued by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau on the 24th, the accused was a security supervisor for Jasa Investigation & Security Services Pte Ltd at the time of the incident.
Charges indicate that the accused allegedly solicited a bribe of 29 SGD on November 22, 2024, at Avery Lodge Dormitory located at 2D Jalan Papan, as a reward for not truthfully reporting the victim’s possession of contraband cigarettes upon entering the dormitory.
In addition, he is also accused of unlawfully possessing the victim's work permit.
The case has been postponed to January 14 next year for the accused to plead guilty.
According to Section 6 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, if found guilty of corruption, the offender can be fined up to 100,000 SGD (approximately 330,000 MYR), or imprisoned for up to 5 years, or both.
