The incident occurred on Sunday night at a porridge restaurant in downtown Hat Yai, shocking all of Thailand.
According to Thai media reports, the couple both died from head injuries caused by gunshots; 48-year-old male victim Sitthipong Siriphan, his 45-year-old wife Orachon Ieankham, and their 6-year-old daughter were at the restaurant celebrating their 12-year-old son's birthday, when they tragically encountered an unexpected disaster!
Witnesses at the scene told media that the deceased couple shielded their daughter from bullets with their bodies; their daughter was also injured in the head by the shooter, but fortunately she was sent to the hospital in time and her life was saved. Amid the chaos, the restaurant owner and another customer were also injured in the incident.
After the incident, the Hat Yai police station, Songkhla provincial crime investigation team, on-duty doctors from Hat Yai hospital, and rescue teams rushed to the scene.
The 50-year-old shooter turned himself in to the police afterwards and handed over the 9mm handgun used in the crime. Police recovered 8 9mm shell casings from the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the shooter arrived at the restaurant alone, ordered some alcohol, and sat down. He then went outside to smoke. During this time, a restaurant staffer mistakenly thought he had settled the bill and began cleaning the table, which angered the shooter, leading to an argument with the restaurant owner and staff.
After leaving the restaurant, the shooter drove away but soon returned and had a heated argument with the owner. During the incident, the shooter drew a handgun from his waist and fired several shots at the owner and customers at adjacent tables, causing multiple casualties.
A restaurant waiter present at the scene reported that the shooter became angry when the staff began cleaning the table, mistakenly thinking he had settled the bill after he went out to smoke.
The police have brought four serious charges against the shooter, including intentional murder, attempted murder, shooting with explosive ammunition in a city or community, and illegal possession of firearms in a city, village, or public place.
This incident also caught the attention of Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin, who stated that the Interior Ministry will remove the shooter from all duties and pursue legal action against him.
