(Bangkok, 3rd) Due to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin being suspended from office, Suriya, who temporarily assumed the role of Prime Minister, will hand over the position on Thursday to Deputy Prime Minister Prommin Lertsuridej, who is the first in the new cabinet’s order of seniority.
On Wednesday (July 2), Suriya presided over the 93rd anniversary ceremony of the Prime Minister’s Office’s establishment in Bangkok.
When asked by the media about his feelings regarding his brief tenure as prime minister, he declined to answer. He said that his most urgent task was “signing documents” to ensure that the handover on Thursday (3rd) can proceed smoothly.
Thai government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said on Wednesday that Suriya, as prime minister, will lead the new ministers of Srettha Thavisin’s second cabinet to swear an oath of office before the Thai King on Thursday morning. After that, Suriya will sign the order appointing Prommin as acting prime minister.
The Thai Constitutional Court on Tuesday (1st) accepted the petition for the impeachment of the prime minister and ordered the suspension of Srettha Thavisin from the office of prime minister. Suriya, previously deputy prime minister and minister of transport, then became acting prime minister.
