German Chancellor: A Glimmer of Hope Emerges in the Middle East, But True Peace is Still Distant

On the 9th, German Chancellor Merz stated that there is “a glimmer of hope” diplomatically in the Middle East situation. The German government hopes to continue supporting opportunities for peace through diplomatic means and, in coordination with the United States and European partners, to reopen dialogue with Iran.

According to China News Service, Merz pointed out at a press conference that the United States and Iran have reached an agreement on issues such as a two-week ceasefire. This is the first “window of opportunity” for a negotiated solution since the conflict began. Although there are positive signals, true peace “is still distant.”

Merz said that the changes in the situation over just the past 24 hours show how fragile a ceasefire is. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains unclear, and there are still major differences between all parties.

Merz stated that the upcoming negotiations are highly challenging and their outcome is crucial to the stability of the Middle East and the development of the world economy. Germany will strive to support this diplomatic process and take appropriate responsibility in maintaining regional peace and stability.

Merz expressed concern over the escalation of conflict in southern Lebanon. He stated that the stronger Israel’s military actions are in southern Lebanon, the greater the risk that the peace process in the Middle East will fail, and that such a situation “must never happen.”
