A 5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Occurred in Offshore Area Near Aomori Prefecture, Japan

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck offshore near Aomori Prefecture, Japan, at 11:48 a.m. on the 1st (10:48 a.m. Malaysia time), with a maximum seismic intensity of 4 and a depth of 80 kilometers.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that seismic intensity level 4 was observed in Eastern Oshima, Northern Tsugaru, Sannohe and Kamikita districts in Aomori Prefecture, Shimokita district in Aomori Prefecture, and Northern Inland of Iwate Prefecture.

Seismic intensity level 3 was observed in Southern Ishikari, Western Iburi, Central Eastern Iburi, Central Tokachi, Southern Tsugaru, and Northern Coastal Iwate Prefecture.

At present, it is assessed that this earthquake did not trigger a tsunami risk.

Kumamoto Earthquake Leaves 36 Dead

Japan has experienced frequent earthquakes lately. On July 28, Kumamoto Prefecture was struck by a strong, shallow 7.1-magnitude earthquake that caused severe damage.

As of the morning of August 1, the death toll from this major quake has risen to 36, with 6 seriously injured and 9,532 people currently accommodated in 348 temporary shelters throughout the prefecture.
