The Yemen 'Youth Movement' (Houthi armed group) Humanitarian Action Coordination Center, based in Sanaa, on the 1st denied rumors about plans to charge passage fees in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, stating that passage through the strait is completely free.
The center's statement said that the safe passage services it provides for ships are entirely free, and all ships outside the scope of the ban may transit safely. The statement also provided an email address for vessels to apply for safe passage services.
The statement emphasized that any individuals or entities requesting payments from ships for passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait do not represent Yemeni authorities.
On July 20, the 'Youth Movement' announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, warning international shipping companies that vessels engaged in trade with Saudi ports may face military strikes. Its spokesperson stated on July 24 that the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has not been closed and that the recently announced maritime measures are only directed at shipping connected to Saudi Arabia.
