(Beijing, 16th) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi introduced the situation of the China-U.S. presidential meeting. On the topic of Taiwan, he said, "During the meeting, it was felt that the U.S. side understands China’s position, values China’s concerns, and, like the international community, does not agree with or accept Taiwan moving toward independence."

U.S. President Trump made a state visit to China from the 13th to the 15th. On the evening of the 15th, the Chinese Foreign Ministry's official website released "Wang Yi introduces to the media the situation and consensus from the China-U.S. presidential meeting."

Wang Yi stated that this was an important meeting as China-U.S. relations stood at a new historical starting point. The meeting included official talks, a welcome banquet, as well as small group exchanges and tours. "The two presidents interacted and spent nearly nine hours together."

He also noted that since Trump's inauguration, the presidents of China and the U.S. have met twice, had five phone calls, and exchanged numerous letters, "providing important strategic support for the improvement and development of China-U.S. relations, and ensuring that, after many ups and downs, the overall situation remains stable." At President Trump's invitation, Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States this autumn.

Regarding the discussion of the Taiwan issue during the Trump-Xi summit, Wang Yi reiterated China's three-point position: First, "The Taiwan issue is China's internal affair." Second, "The Taiwan issue is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations." If not handled properly, it could lead to collision or even conflict between the two countries, pushing China-U.S. relations into a very dangerous situation. China hopes that the U.S. side will take concrete actions to maintain the stable development of China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

He said, third, safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common denominator of both sides. To achieve this, the precondition is that there must be no support or indulgence of "Taiwan independence," since "Taiwan independence" and peace across the strait are incompatible. Wang Yi said: "During the meeting, it was felt that the U.S. side understands China’s position, values China’s concerns, and, like the international community, does not agree with or accept Taiwan moving toward independence."

On economic and trade matters, Wang Yi said that the two countries' economic and trade teams achieved balanced and positive overall results. These include continuing to implement all prior consensus reached through consultations, agreeing to establish a trade council and an investment council, resolving mutual concerns on market access for agricultural products, and expanding two-way trade under a framework of reciprocal tariff reductions.

On the Middle East situation, Wang Yi reiterated China's position, expressing support for continued negotiations between the U.S. and Iran to resolve differences including the nuclear issue, advocating for the swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on the basis of maintaining a ceasefire, and holding that the fundamental solution to the Strait issue lies in achieving a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, he stated that both China and the U.S. hope for an early end to the conflict, and that both sides have made considerable efforts in their own ways to promote peace and negotiations. Complex problems have no simple solutions, and peace talks are difficult to achieve in one step. China and the U.S. are willing to continue communication and play a constructive role in the political resolution of the crisis.
