A video circulating online shows a man in Shantou, Guangdong, China, grabbing a young girl about 3 or 4 years old on the street and throwing her into a river. Fortunately, an elderly man passing by discovered the girl and rescued her.
On the 2nd, the Xilu Town People's Government issued a statement about the incident, which occurred on the morning of the 1st. The man, who suffers from a mental illness, threw his own younger sister into a ditch. Two passing good Samaritans worked together to rescue the girl. The man has now been sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment, and the girl is unharmed.
The video shows the young girl walking alone on a pedestrian path, followed by a man in blue. The man suddenly speeds up to catch up with the girl, picks her up off-camera, then quickly crosses the road to the riverbank, lifts the girl up, and throws her into the river before fleeing.
After the girl fell into the river, several motorcycles passed by but did not notice her. About 30 seconds later, a middle-aged man riding a motorcycle saw the girl in distress, stopped his vehicle, ran about 10 meters, climbed over a barrier, and jumped into the water to rescue her.
After the man entered the water, a mother and daughter, apparently responding to cries for help, came over to assist and helped bring the girl from the rescuer’s hands back onto the road.
Soon after, an elderly woman walked by, accompanied by the “perpetrator” in blue. The elderly woman then took the girl away while chastising the man in blue as she walked.
