The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a severe public health challenge for Chiang Mai, Thailand. Local public health authorities note that the province has accumulated approximately 23,900 cases, with around 700 new cases each year, which is equivalent to an average of nearly 2 new cases daily.
According to a report by the Bangkok Post on the 27th, HIV infection has gradually spread to a broader range of groups and is no longer confined to specific populations. Among those particularly affected are migrant workers and ethnic minorities. Due to language barriers, lack of medical rights, absence of proper identification documents, and the pressure of social stigma, these vulnerable groups often choose to delay or even avoid screening and treatment.
According to data from the Chiang Mai Provincial Public Health Office, the HIV prevalence rate among male ethnic minorities engaged in sex work is as high as 3.6%, highlighting the gaps that still exist in protection and medical services for this population.
Additionally, the 15–24 age group is also a cause for concern. Data show that nearly 49% of new infections in Thailand occur within this age group. Officials analyze that the main reasons include changes in sexual behavior patterns, weak awareness of prevention, and the lack of youth-friendly healthcare access.
Adults aged 25 to 49 remain the age group with the highest number of new infections. As this group tends to be more socially and sexually active, they are still the primary target for health education initiatives from local health authorities.
