(Kuala Lumpur, 27th) Malaysia hopes Cambodia and Thailand will finalize the terms of reference for the establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) at the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that as the rotating chair of ASEAN, Malaysia hopes this goal can be achieved in order to further strengthen the role of the AOT at the borders of the two countries.
"We are very grateful that both countries still respect the agreement signed in Putrajaya in July, and we hope this agreement can be ultimately finalized.
"Next, the two countries will need to resolve common border issues through negotiations, as border issues involve bilateral matters. Malaysia's attitude or stance towards the internal affairs of the two countries is in line with the ASEAN Charter."
Mohamad Hasan stated this at a press conference at the Office of the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations on Friday, after attending the quadrilateral meeting between the US, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand held during the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting was chaired by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. Malaysia was represented by Mohamad Hasan, who also served as mediator and coordinator. The other two representatives were Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn.
