Amid Intensifying Great Power Competition, Foreign Minister: ASEAN Continues Its Own Path

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan reiterated that ASEAN will continue to walk its own path amid the intensifying game and competition of regional superpowers.

He pointed out that with its significant geostrategic position, diverse culture, and economic influence, Southeast Asia has tremendous potential.

“One frequently asked question relates to the incoming President of the United States and how this will affect the dynamics of the related region in the coming years. Our region has become a focal point for superpower competition.”

“Hidden behind this tension is an unspoken fact: this situation only arises because, as I previously mentioned, we have tremendous potential.”

He delivered these remarks in his opening speech at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' informal meeting at the Langkawi International Convention Center on Sunday.

Furthermore, Mohamad Hasan hopes that the new leaders of ASEAN dialogue partner countries will recognize the increasing important role of the group and engage through diplomatic channels and an open attitude.

“This is the role we must play for ourselves. We are the spokespersons, not the endorsers.”

Mohamad Hasan pointed out that ASEAN's central position might face challenges, and therefore, a lot of preparation is needed, and many things need to be anticipated.

“With the changing global order, many multilateral agreements have emerged and may continue to emerge, potentially disrupting the security landscape of the region, and we must ensure ASEAN remains the core platform we seek for solutions.”

Mohamad Hasan said ASEAN's total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is 3.8 trillion dollars, with a population of 677 million, and it must stride its own path.

“As a collective, as ASEAN, our strength is the strength of a giant... The power of ASEAN lies in that it represents a completely different mode of engagement. In this mode, joint decision-making transcends governance differences.

“In this mode, influence is not measured solely by military or economic strength, but by the ability to foster dialogue, encourage cooperation, and build the trust necessary for global peace and prosperity.”
