Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will conduct a working visit to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from April 28 to 29 to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
The Foreign Ministry's statement noted that this meeting is the first of its kind this year for the foreign ministers of BRICS member and partner countries.
The meeting is also one of the important preludes to the BRICS Leaders' Summit, scheduled to be held from July 6 to 7, with Brazil as the chairing country.
Under Brasil's leadership, BRICS will focus on six priority areas: global health, trade and investment, climate change, artificial intelligence, reform of peace and security mechanisms within the multilateral system, and institutional development.
“These priorities are highly aligned with Malaysia's national interests and its commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.”
“Emphasizing trade and investment is appropriate and timely given the increasing uncertainty of the global economic landscape caused by the unilateral tariffs imposed by the United States.”
During the meeting, Mohamad Hasan will deliver Malaysia's national statement in a session entitled "The Role of the Global South in Strengthening Multilateralism."
This statement reflects Malaysia's firm commitment to strengthening multilateralism, expanding the voice and interests of developing countries, consistent with the core aspirations of BRICS 2025.
Malaysia will also share its strategic perspectives on major global challenges.
“As the ASEAN chair in 2025, Malaysia will actively advocate for deeper interaction between ASEAN and BRICS, aiming to promote regional cooperation, enhance economic collaboration, and reinforce joint efforts to achieve a more equitable and sustainable global economy.”
Malaysia will officially become a BRICS partner country on January 1, 2025.
