(Kuching, 26th) Sarawak needs to transform its agricultural sector to ensure future food security.

Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi, Minister of Sarawak Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, stated that agriculture remains a main pillar in ensuring the well-being and prosperity of the state's people.

He noted that Sarawak's food trade deficit in 2023 reached RM5.67 billion, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen the agriculture sector.

"Agricultural transformation is not only necessary but also an opportunity to make Sarawak a major food production center in the region."

He said this while speaking at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Sarawak Agricultural Department last night.

He said that as a strategic move, Sarawak's agricultural sector will be driven by modern technology, data analysis, and scientific research.

He said this aligns with the post-COVID development strategy, which aims for sustainable agriculture and strengthened food security.

He emphasized that moving in this direction, farmers need to abandon traditional farming methods and shift to modern approaches.

"Agriculture is not just about self-sufficiency; it is a business that can offer good returns."

"The use of technologies such as the Internet of Things, smart sensors, drones, and mechanization is expected to enhance productivity and attract young people to join the industry."

In addition, he said, the government's major initiatives include developing cattle farming centers in Kuching, Serian, and Betong, and utilizing palm oil waste to produce animal feed by the Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority.

He further explained that establishing agriculture parks, Sarawak Agriculture Technology Parks, precision agriculture parks, and aquaculture parks are necessary to increase commercial food production.

He said through this far-reaching project, the Sarawak government encourages private sector involvement in commercial agriculture.
