(Kuching, 26th) Transforming agriculture into a commercial enterprise is crucial for driving Sarawak's economy and ensuring its growth as a high-income state. The Sarawak government remains committed to increasing household income by focusing on the agricultural sector.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that the agricultural sector contributed approximately RM15 billion or 10.6% to Sarawak's Gross Domestic Product in 2023.
“Therefore, we need to strengthen the concept of agriculture as a commercial enterprise. When viewed as a business venture, all aspects of the economy or culture should evolve. I want to focus on rice because it is our staple food.”
Premier Abang Johari made these remarks last night at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Sarawak Ministry of Agriculture.
According to him, there are three key standards required by the Sarawak government for workers: individuals of high quality, particularly those proficient in technology; psychologists capable of changing the societal mindset; and individuals continuously generating new ideas.
He envisions the Ministry of Agriculture becoming a catalyst in the next 50 years, turning agriculture into a sector driven by technology and commercial enterprises.
“This will be part of our efforts to export products to the international market, enabling us to benefit from foreign exchange. Sarawak will become a leading high-income state, and its people will also enjoy high incomes.”
During the ceremony, Abang Johari was awarded the Ministry of Agriculture's 100th Anniversary Special Award.
