Karim: SCC to Establish a One-Stop Handicraft Centre in Kuching

(Kuching, 20th) The Sarawak Craft Council (SCC) will set up a fully functional one-stop handicraft centre in Kuching, further strengthening the state government’s efforts to revitalize the local handicraft industry.

Sarawak’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim, after chairing the inaugural board meeting of the Craft Council today, pointed out that the centre will be named the "Sarawak Handicraft Centre" and will include the SCC office, an exhibition gallery, and a handicraft sales area.

"As the state capital, Kuching must have a comprehensive handicraft centre. The location has been decided—behind the Sikh temple, adjacent to the road leading to the Borneo Cultures Museum, occupying two acres."

He emphasized that this location has strategic advantages, being close to the ART station and the Borneo Cultures Museum, as well as being a hotspot for tourism and cultural activities.

"Currently, there is no suitable place for visitors to purchase handicrafts after touring the museum. The handicraft centre will fill this void, and become an ideal venue for tourists to buy Sarawak handicraft products."

In addition, Abdul Karim also announced that the SCC plans to establish a "Sarawak Craft Day" to recognize local artisans who excel in the field.

"We hope to set up a dedicated Craft Day, presenting certificates, awards, or honorary titles to encourage more people to participate in the preservation and innovation of crafts."

He said this initiative aligns with the vision of the Sarawak Cultural Council, focusing not only on the protection and transmission of cultural heritage, but also on making handicrafts a catalyst for economic growth and a bridge for unity in Sarawak’s multicultural society.
