A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi is an old friend of China, “and we have always been concerned about her situation.”

On April 25, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Myanmar’s new president Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. At a regular press conference on the 30th, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian was asked whether Wang Yi and Min Aung Hlaing discussed the imprisoned former Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Lin Jian said: “We have already released information about Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Myanmar. Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi is an old friend of China, and we have always been concerned about her situation. As a friendly neighboring country, China supports Myanmar in taking a development path suited to its national conditions, and supports all parties in Myanmar in achieving broader, stronger, and more lasting peace and reconciliation.”

Aung San Suu Kyi, who will turn 81 this June, is the winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize. On February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military launched a coup, overthrew the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi, detained this democratic leader, and laid multiple charges against her.
