(Bandar Seri Begawan, 26th) Two foreign men have been sentenced for violating immigration regulations.
The Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) reported two cases brought under Chapter 17 of the Immigration Act, involving a Bangladeshi citizen and a Malaysian citizen.
In the first case, Bangladeshi national Mohamad Riben (30 years old) admitted to overstaying and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment and three strokes of the cane. He was charged under Section 15(1), Chapter 17 of the Immigration Act for remaining in Brunei after the expiry of his immigration pass. His sentence will take effect from July 31, 2025, upon remand.
Meanwhile, Malaysian national An Lan (64 years old) was found guilty under Section 6(1)(c) of the same Act for entering and residing in Brunei without holding a valid immigration pass. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment and fined BND 1,000 (in lieu of caning). However, as he failed to pay the fine, the court imposed an additional one month of imprisonment, bringing his total sentence to four months, effective from August 13, 2025.
The department reiterated its determination to enforce the Immigration Act and warned that strict measures will continue to be taken against violators.
