Population Over 65 Exceeds 20%: Taiwan Enters 'Super-Aged Society'

Statistics from Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior on the 9th show that by the end of 2025, Taiwan's total population will be 23,299,132, with the population aged 65 and above reaching 4,673,155, accounting for 20.06% of the total, signifying that Taiwan has officially entered a 'super-aged society.'

The data shows that by the end of 2025, Taiwan's population will have decreased by 101,088 compared to the same period in 2024, with the trend of negative population growth continuing for two years. The number of newborns in Taiwan in 2025 is projected at 107,812, marking a decline for ten consecutive years and another record low; total deaths are expected to reach 200,268, with a crude annual death rate of 8.58 per thousand, a decrease of 1,839 from 2024; there will be 104,376 marriages, with a crude marriage rate of 4.47 per thousand, a decrease of 18,685 couples compared to 2024.

According to the World Health Organization's definition, a society with people aged 65 and over accounting for 7% of the total population is termed an 'aging society,' 14% is an 'aged society,' and reaching 20% qualifies as a 'super-aged society.' Taiwan became an 'aging society' in 1993 and transitioned to an 'aged society' in 2018.
