MIRI: A new chip designed by Sarawakian talent in Cardiff, United Kingdom (UK), is being developed for use in advanced medical equipment, marking another step forward in Sarawak’s push into high-value technology and innovation.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the chip, produced through Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD), will play an important role in medical applications by enabling the storage of data and assisting in guiding medical procedures.

“SMD will produce a new chip designed by Sarawakians in Cardiff, UK. This semiconductor chip can be used in medical equipment to store data and guide operations.

“Nowadays, X-rays are no longer widely used; instead, scanning is used. These scans must be fast and accurate to determine illnesses. This is all dependent on chips that process images very quickly and can detect weaknesses in the body,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the officiating of Miri Smart City Command Centre (MSCCC) at Imperial Hotel here today.

He noted that collaboration with international partners remains essential in developing cutting-edge technologies and driving innovation in strategic sectors, including healthcare.

“Therefore, Sarawak must collaborate with external partners to create new innovations based on smart technology,” he said.

Abang Johari also said the development of advanced technologies would also create significant employment opportunities for Sarawakians in the coming years.

“By 2030, in terms of job creation, we estimate that we will generate between 39,000 and 48,750 new high-skilled digital jobs. That is why we are providing free university education – to prepare young people so they can master technology and take control of future systems.

“If you do not have technology, you cannot lead. Therefore, we must provide education so that the way we work and deliver services will be transformed,” he added.

He said Sarawak’s human capital development strategy is aimed at ensuring the population is equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven economy.

“I believe that in this situation, Sarawak – with a population of 2.8 million -should ensure at least 70 per cent are knowledgeable and skilled,” he added.

“We are also moving towards an ageing population where people live longer and remain active. Therefore, we must use smart gadgets and devices.”
