[Trump-Putin Meeting] Three-on-Three Closed-Door Talks Last Three Hours – Trump: Progress Made But No Agreement

Published at Aug 16, 2025 09:55 am
On the 15th, U.S. President Trump said at a joint press conference with Russian President Putin that they had reached consensus on many topics during their meeting, but had not yet reached an agreement.

Earlier that day, Trump and Putin held a nearly three-hour small group meeting at the Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in the suburbs of Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine. Trump did not specify what progress was made during the talks.

An originally scheduled one-on-one bilateral meeting was changed at the last minute, with Trump joined by U.S. Secretary of State Rubio and envoy Wyckoff for a three-on-three closed-door meeting with the Russians.

The two leaders appeared together at the press conference after the meeting and made statements in turn, but left the venue without taking questions from the media.

Trump said today's meeting was very constructive, "We reached consensus on many issues," with only a few major issues where consensus had not yet been fully reached, but progress had been made, "So, before an agreement is reached, there is not yet an agreement."

He said he would later call NATO and also call (Ukrainian President) Zelensky to inform them of the talks, "Ultimately, it will be up to them to make a decision."

Putin: Restoring U.S.-Russia Cooperation Is 'Important and Necessary'

At the joint press conference, Putin said that turning the page and restoring cooperation in U.S.-Russia relations is "important and necessary," and he hopes the understanding reached with Trump will "pave the way to peace in Ukraine."

Putin said: "I have every reason to believe that by moving forward on this path, we can end the conflict in Ukraine, and the sooner the better."

Possible Further Meetings

During the joint press conference, Trump and Putin indicated that another meeting might be possible, but neither revealed whether the next meeting would be bilateral or involve other countries.

At the close of the press conference, Trump thanked Putin, saying the two might meet again soon. Putin replied in English, "Next time in Moscow." Trump responded that it's an interesting proposal, "I may be criticized for this, but I think it's possible."
